Many times, when people look at the spectrum of Christianity, they view it as two distinct groups: Catholic and Protestant. The problem with this is much the same as seeing politics as democrat and republican. The problem is not so much in the groups themselves, but in that it is very easy to support one group merely because you hate the other. In other words, a person can be a democrat not because he thinks the democrats are always right, but merely because he hates the republicans much more. This is the problem whenever someone is deciding between two distinct options. In a similar manner, a Protestant can find protestantism appealing, not because he find the Biblical arguments for it so convincing, but because he finds the Biblical arguments for Catholicism so unconvincing. Now here is where Eastern Christianity fits in. They prevent Christianity from being limited to just two categories. These churches have there own histories. They existed before the reformation and they never went through the reformation.
